Newborn Snapshot: What to Expect

Body & Skin
Expect fine vernix (“waxy white substance”) on the skin and possible lanugo (soft hair)—both natural and protective
The skin might look blotchy or bluish at first, gradually normalizing over hours to days
Feeding
Babies feed 8–12 times in 24 hours, often every 1–3 hours
Early breastfeeding ideally starts within the first hour after birth, aiding bonding and milk production
Sleeping
Expect erratic cat naps lasting only a few hours at a time
Newborns sleep 14–17 hours per day, usually waking for feeding and diaper changes
Health & Safety
Always place baby to sleep on their back in a firm, empty crib to reduce SIDS risk
Umbilical stump typically dries and falls off by 3 weeks; gentle sponge baths are recommended until then
Bonding & Development
Touch, cuddling, and skin-to-skin (“kangaroo care”) offer essential comfort and bonding
First smiles may appear around 2 months, but bonding is rich even before that
Hearing & Sound Recognition

Bathing
First bath: at least 24 hours after birth; sponge baths until stump falls off

Diapers & Weight
Expect 5–6 wet and 1–2 poopy diapers daily; weight often dips (3–7%) in first week, rebounds by day 10–14 .
